CFP for AAG 2024: Place & SDOH Symposium

Place & the Social-Spatial Determinants of Health Symposium

CFP for AAG Annual Meeting 2024
Honolulu, Hawai’i, April 16 – April 20, 2024

Submission Deadline: November 16, 2023

Sponsoring AAG Specialty Groups: Health & Medical Geography, Community Geographies Collaborative, Geographic Information Science and Systems

Description

The Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) refer to the wide range of political, economic, social, and cultural factors that have a significant impact on individuals’ physical and mental well-being. However, how these factors affect different communities significantly differs depending on the locations where they live, work, grow, and age. Consequently, these diverse spatial outcomes call for innovative, interdisciplinary, and intersectional methodologies to enhance our understanding of the connections between SDoH and places.

Researchers in geography and related disciplines have the unique opportunity to unravel the intricate and multidimensional aspects of SDoH from a spatial perspective. Effectively delineating SDoH’s spatial dimensions holds the potential to refine current research in public health, enrich the awareness of the role of places within health policies, and advance health equity in urban and rural environments. By bringing together an interdisciplinary group of health scholars, this symposium aims to deliberate on how diverse and complementary geographic perspectives can enrich the conceptualization and research of S&SDoH. We invite submissions of academic papers and research-creation practices that address this challenge, defined as “Place & the Social-Spatial Determinants of Health.” Your contributions in this regard are most welcome.

Specific topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Conceptualization of SDoH with a focus on geospatial perspectives (and the Social Spatial Determinants of Health)
  • Spatially heterogeneous effects on environmental health
  • Intersectional, risk environment, sociological, and other conceptual framework adoptions in S&SDoH research
  • Space-time analytics on S&SDoH research
  • Open infrastructure development for sharing geospatial data and knowledge of S&SDoH
  • Geographical challenges in SDoH theoretical, applied, or technological implementations
  • Community-based cartographies to assess health disparities
  • Artistic interventions in the context of health geographies and policies
