Linking human brain with urban environments using emerging GIS approaches.
Join us for lunch, learning, and conversation at the next installment of the HEROP Speaker Series on Friday, February 27th, at 12 PM CST. Lunch will be served from 12-12:30pm, so please join us in person a bit early to eat & mingle!
Jiaxin Feng, PhD,
Dartmouth College
Friday, February 27th @ 12PM,
via Zoom & In-Person in NHB 2049, Urbana, IL
The convergence of mobile, geospatial, and neural technologies has created the technical foundation for monitoring and georeferencing brain and body signals associated with mental states and health statuses. Dr. Feng’s current research combines neural sensing and geospatial technologies to explore the physiological and psychological impacts of environments on individuals for human well-being and sustainable cities. A central question guides her current work: How can we study dynamic human-environment psychophysiological interactions to enhance human well-being and inform urban development? To address this, Dr. Feng introduces neural sensing, a novel GIS approach for measuring subjective responses from the brain to surrounding environments. It expands the scope of sensing technologies from remote and social sensing to mental sensing. Empirical studies are further introduced to demonstrate the capabilities of neural sensing and its applications in human-centered geospatial studies.
About the Speaker
Jiaxin Feng, PhD
Jiaxin Feng is a Guarini Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Geospatial Information Science in the Department of Geography at Dartmouth College. Her research interests include GIScience, GeoAI, spatial statistics, neuro-urbanism, mobile biosensing, health, and crime. Jiaxin earned a Ph.D. in Geography with a focus on GIScience in the Department of Geography at the University of Washington. She received a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in Geography and Urban-rural Planning in the School of Geography and Planning at Sun Yat-Sen University.
In-person or Virtual?
The in-person option is open the University of Illinois community (students, staff, and faculty). We will have lunch for all attendees who RSVP by Wednesday @10am before the event. To register for the in-person option, please access the following link: go.illinois.edu/HEROP-FEB27
A virtual option via Zoom is available for the public. To register for the Zoom option, please access the following link: go.illinois.edu/HEROP-ZOOM-FEB27
About the Series
The HEROP Speaker Series connects scholars, experts, and innovative thinkers to discuss different conceptual, methodological, and technological facets of public health to better understand the social determinants of health, and how place may influence outcomes. The Healthy Regions & Policies (HEROP) Lab integrates innovative GIScience, public health, and statistical approaches to explore, understand, and promote healthy places. We’re experts in the spatial & social determinants of health. We’re based out of the Dept of Geography & GIScience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
