Innovations in Mapping Health & Structural Drivers of Disease & Well-Being

Our editorial team (Dr. Kolak with Dr. Yanjia Cao and Dr. Michael Desjardins, Ph.D.) is thrilled to share that the our Collection at the Journal of Maps has been released, built and carefully curated over the past three years!! 😮 🤯 Check it out now at JOM.

In this collection on #MappingHealth, we highlight how researchers have visualized health events, interactions, and services, as well as the complex, multidimensional factors driving health disparities. Over the past three years, contributors have brought diverse perspectives to the challenges of capturing temporal and spatial complexity in population health. They integrate novel approaches to address the structural, social, and spatial determinants of health.

Collectively, the articles highlight innovative or exceptional approaches to mapping integrated datasets for disease surveillance; using geovisualizations to explore structural factors that drive health disparities; and mapping results of spatial analyses of population health and spatial epidemiological studies.

In addition to great reading, these are also super articles to:

  • 📚 use in teaching public health & GIS in coming year
  • 🥸 learn new approaches, and
  • 🗺️ be inspired!

Lead authors include: Veronika Květoňová, Michelle Wong, David Haynes, Tyson King-Meadows, Penelope Mitchell, Yoonjung Ahn, Daniel C Browning Jr, Aaron Adams , Shamsi Soltani, MPH, and Jay Christian.

A huge thanks to Mike Smith, Chief Editor of the Journal of Maps, for this opportunity, as well as the whole production team and countless and essential work of the the reviewers. Together, we move the science forward. 🦾
